Exam fact
Is the CCMA exam hard?
It's demanding for its breadth and pace more than for trick questions: the CCMA exam packs 180 questions into 3 hours across 12 areas, from phlebotomy to medical law, and scores you against a fixed scaled pass line of 390.

Is the CCMA exam hard?
Broad and fast-paced: 180 questions, 3 hours, 12 areas
How hard it feels depends on you; the format is fixed. The NHA test plan sets 150 scored and 30 pretest questions, 3 hours, and seven domains, one of which splits into six clinical subdomains. That's the shape you're preparing for.

§01
Where the difficulty comes from
Worry shrinks once it has a name and a page number.
Nerves before this exam are normal, and they get smaller once you see how it's built: a vague fear turns into four specific ones, and specific ones can be studied.
- Breadth. One exam covers drawing blood, placing EKG leads, coding with ICD-10 and CPT, consent and HIPAA. Few people are equally strong in all of it.
- Pace. About one minute per question across 180 questions. Knowing the material isn't quite enough; you need to recall it quickly.
- Unknown pretest items. Thirty questions don't count, and you can't tell which. Some of the unfamiliar ones are probably those.
- A scaled cut score. The 390 pass line doesn't convert to a percentage, so there's no safe number of misses to aim for.
§02
Where the weight is
Difficulty is uneven, and so is the scoring. Start with the long bars.
A topic that feels hard isn't always one that scores heavily. EKG rhythms worry plenty of candidates, yet that area carries 6 scored items. General patient care, with positioning, injections and wound care, carries 28. If your time is limited, the top four bars cover close to half the exam.
§03
Signs you're getting ready
Concrete markers beat a general sense of confidence.
- You can say which areas carry the most items without looking them up.
- You've practiced every one of the 12 areas, including the small ones like EKG and law & ethics.
- You've finished at least one timed mock exam inside 3 hours.
- You review explanations for questions you got right as well as the misses.
- Your weakest area has its own slot in your study plan.
The exam asks for a little of everything, quickly. Prepare for exactly that, one area at a time.
§04
Pass rates, pace and where to start
What is the CCMA exam pass rate?
NHA doesn't publish one, so there's no verified figure to quote.
What makes the CCMA exam hard?
The range of topics and the pace: 12 areas and about a minute per question.
What if I don't pass the first time?
You can retest after 30 days, with three attempts before a one-year wait. See the retake policy.
Where should I start studying?
With the largest areas in the study guide, beginning with general patient care.
