Certification path
How to become a CCMA, step by step
You become a CCMA in five steps: confirm you meet the NHA eligibility rules, prepare, register and schedule, pass the exam, then download your certificate. Most of the calendar time goes into step one, the training or work experience, not into the exam.
- steps, in NHA's order
- 5
- exam fee (Oct 2026)
- $169
- until first renewal
- 2 years

Where you probably are right now
Still deciding? This is the right time to check the rules.
A long path with a dozen unknowns about training, money and the test itself feels heavier than it is. It gets lighter once you sort those unknowns by step. The National Healthcareer Association (NHA) lays the process out as five steps in its Candidate Handbook, and each one has a fixed rule you can check today.
Start with step 1. If you already finished a medical assistant program in the past five years, or you have worked as an MA under supervision for a year, you may be closer than you think. Check the details on the eligibility page before you spend anything.
§02
The five steps
Same order as the NHA handbook. Skip none.
1. Check your eligibility
You need a high school diploma or equivalent (GED or a state-recognized equivalency) plus one of two pathways: MA training completed within the past 5 years, or supervised MA work experience (1 year in the last 3, or 2 years in the last 5). Training can be an accredited or state-recognized program, a DOL-registered apprenticeship, U.S. military medical training, or an employer program. High-school students can test before graduating and receive a provisional certification.
2. Prepare and study
The exam follows the 2022 NHA test plan: 7 domains, with Clinical Patient Care at 84 of 150 scored items. Build your weeks around that weighting; the 4, 8 and 12-week plans do it for you. NHA states that its prep materials aren't required to sit the exam.
3. Register and schedule
Create your own NHA candidate profile (not one made by a parent or teacher), apply for the exam, accept the attestations and pay. Payment must be finished within 2 hours of applying or the application is voided. Then book a date at your school, a PSI test center, or Live Remote Proctoring.
4. Take the exam
180 multiple-choice questions in 3 hours; 150 are scored and 30 are unmarked pretest items. Bring a government-issued photo ID with a signature. The passing mark is 390 on a 200 to 500 scaled score.
5. Obtain your certification
After a pass, you print the certificate from your NHA account ("My Achievements") and your name appears in NHA's public Verification Tool. Results arrive right after the exam at a school site, or within 48 hours from PSI or remote proctoring. The credential lasts 2 years, then you renew it.
§03
How long it takes
The exam is one afternoon. Eligibility is the long part.
| Stage | What sets the clock | Rule |
|---|---|---|
| Training route | Program finished within the window | Within the past 5 years |
| Experience route | Supervised MA work | 1 year in the last 3, or 2 years in the last 5 |
| Employer program | On-the-job part after coursework | 180 days to finish; certificate held until then |
| Pre-externship | Externship after coursework | 90 days to finish; certificate held until then |
| Application | Payment after you apply | 2 hours, or the application is voided |
| Accommodations | NHA review of the request | Allow 30 days |
| Exam day | Seat time | 3 hours for 180 questions |
| Results | PSI center or remote proctoring | Within 48 hours |
Program length itself depends on the school or employer; NHA does not set it.
§04
What you can do online, and what you can't
"Online CCMA" usually means one of three different things.
People searching for CCMA certification online usually mean one of three things, and the answer differs for each.
- The paperwork. Fully online: profile, application, attestations, payment and scheduling all happen in your NHA account.
- The exam. Can be taken from home through Live Remote Proctoring, if your internet supports VoIP and your computer is compatible. If you register on your own rather than through a school, your choices are a PSI center or remote proctoring. Details are on the online-exam page.
- The training. NHA's rule names who must provide it (an accredited or state-recognized provider, an apprenticeship, the military, or an employer) and when (within 5 years). If a program includes an externship, the pre-externship route gives you 90 days to complete it after testing.
So the certificate is never handed out for a course alone: everyone sits the same proctored 180-question exam.
§05
Words you'll meet on the way
These appear in the handbook and on your account screens.
- Pathway 1
Eligibility through training finished within the past 5 years.
- Pathway 2
Eligibility through supervised MA work: 1 year in 3, or 2 years in 5. California residents on this route need 2 years in 5.
- Provisional certification
What a high-school student receives after passing before graduation; it converts with proof of graduation.
- Attestation
Your signed statement at registration that you meet the rules; NHA may audit it.
- LRP
Live Remote Proctoring: the exam taken from your own computer with a remote proctor.
- NCCA
The accrediting body (part of the Institute for Credentialing Excellence) that accredits all NHA certification programs.
§06
Questions people ask at this stage
How long does it take to become a CCMA?
The exam takes 3 hours and results arrive within 48 hours from PSI or remote proctoring. The longer part is eligibility: either a training program finished within the last 5 years, or 1 year of supervised MA work in the last 3. Program length is set by the school.
Can I get my CCMA certification completely online?
The application, payment and exam can all be done online, the exam through Live Remote Proctoring. Eligibility still requires qualifying training or supervised work experience.
How much does it cost to become a CCMA?
The exam application is $169 per attempt on the NHA store as of 2026-10-05. Prep materials are separate and optional. See the cost breakdown for retakes and rescheduling.
Is the CCMA a license?
No. It's a national certification; NHA states it's separate from any state requirement to practice. More on what that means for you.
What can I earn once certified?
The BLS reports a median of $45,690 a year for all medical assistants (May 2025); it doesn't split pay by credential. The salary page has the full figures.
