§02

What counts as training

Five routes. Two of them let you test before you finish.

MA training program

From an accredited or state-recognized provider, completed within the past 5 years.

Registered apprenticeship

A U.S. Department of Labor-registered apprenticeship.

Military training

U.S. military medical training.

Employer program

The coursework part of an employer's program. You then have 180 days to finish the on-the-job portion, and NHA holds the certificate until completion is confirmed.

Pre-externship

Coursework done, externship not yet. You have 90 days to finish the externship; the certificate is held until then.

§03

Check yourself in four questions

Answer in order. Stop at the first yes after question 1.

  1. Do you have a high school diploma, GED or state-recognized equivalent?

If not yet, and you're still in high school, you can test early for a provisional certification (see special cases below). Otherwise this one comes first.

  2. Did you finish qualifying training within the past 5 years?

Yes: you're on Pathway 1. This includes an employer program's coursework or a program where only the externship is left.

  3. Have you worked as a supervised MA for 1 of the last 3 years, or 2 of the last 5?

Yes: you're on Pathway 2. In California, only the 2-in-5 option counts.

  4. Neither?

Either finish a program or build the work time, or, if your case is unusual, ask NHA through the Appeals form for an exception before paying.

§04

Special cases

If one of these is you, read it twice before applying.

California residents on the experience route

The handbook sets a longer bar: at least 2 years of MA work in the 5 years before your exam date. The one-year-in-three option doesn't apply.

High-school students

You can test before you graduate. A pass gives you a Provisional Certification, valid for 12 months from the exam date, which you convert to a full certification by sending proof of graduation.

Situations the rules don't cover

NHA accepts exception requests through its Appeals form; the Disciplinary & Appeals Committee decides. File it before you pay for the exam.

§05

What to keep on file

You attest at registration. Proof is only asked for if you're audited.

  • Your high school diploma, GED or state-recognized equivalency certificate.
  • Pathway 1: your program completion record, with the date (it must fall within 5 years).
  • Pathway 2: employer letters or records showing supervised MA work and the dates.
  • A certified translation for any document not in English, if NHA requests one.
  • Your own NHA candidate profile login. A parent or teacher can't apply for you.

§06

How this compares with other MA credentials

The work-experience route is the main difference from the CMA (AAMA). Its routes run through a CAAHEP- or ABHES-accredited program, AAMA's Alternative Pathway, a prior CMA or MA teaching, and none of them is experience-only. The full side-by-side is on CCMA vs CMA (AAMA rules as of October 2026). Once you qualify, the remaining steps are on how to become a CCMA.

§07

Eligibility questions

Can I take the CCMA exam without going to school?

Yes, through Pathway 2: 1 year of supervised MA work in the last 3 years, or 2 years in the last 5, plus a high school diploma or equivalent.

My MA program was 6 years ago. Am I eligible?

Not through training. Training older than 5 years requires the work-experience pathway.

Do I have to send documents when I apply?

You attest that you qualify when you register. NHA may audit, so keep proof of your diploma and of your training or experience.

Does meeting the requirements let me work in any state?

The certification is separate from state requirements to practice. See whether the CCMA is a license.
